As one of the most historic cities in the country, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of things to do in Philadelphia. It can be hard to decide what to see when you have limited time, especially when you factor in any special events that may be happening. Here are some of the must-see attractions in the City of Brotherly Love.
The Philadelphia Zoo was the first zoo in America and is still considered one of the very best. The facility is dedicated to conservation efforts and therefore has made a name as home to a number of rare and severely endangered species, such as the Amur Tiger and the Blue-Eyed Black Lemur. They also host a number of special events throughout the year for all ages.
Dating back to 1893, Reading Terminal is one of the oldest public markets in America that is still operating, and it’s home to some of the best shopping in Philadelphia. You can find nearly anything here, from fresh groceries to handcrafted soaps and body products. There are even vendors selling home decor and clothes. It’s easy to spend hours in the building and a great way to support small businesses.
Get out into nature at Wissahickon Park, located on the Northwest side of Philly. The area has inspired great minds like Edgar Allen Poe and still serves as a refuge from the busy urban lifestyle. The Park is an excellent destination for hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.
In the 1700s, the Peirce family began the arboretum, and it quickly expanded, housing botanical specimens from experts around the country. Now Longwood Garden is a stunning display of horticulture with numerous gardens in various styles, various educational programs, and special events connected to different topics throughout the year. It’s a lovely way to spend a peaceful morning, and even better if you have the chance to visit during an event.
Visit one of the most beautiful – and spacious – historical mansions, nearby in Delaware. With 77 rooms, Nemours Estate is clearly designed for luxury, and the French-inspired gardens are a masterpiece. The guided tour is fascinating.
Take the Main Line to Chanticleer Gardens, where the property was originally developed in 1912. Considered a pleasure garden, the space is perfectly designed to show off the variety of plants and highlight the different beautiful flowers in small tableaus.
See historic houses dating back to before the American Revolution on Elfreth’s Alley. While most homes are still privately owned, the museum on the street provides insight into how the area has developed in the past three centuries, and special events allow small peeks into many of the preserved homes.
Similar to Elfreth’s Alley, Addison Street takes you back into history. It’s actually believed to be the prettiest street in the country, gently sheltered with trees and featuring a brick pathway that’s been well-maintained. The street is definitely worth a visit during the winter when snow is on the ground - it will take your breath away.
